Choosing the perfect winter coat
Here at Windsmoor, we love the colder weather! Famous for our winter coats, we are the destination for fabulous coats for women from size 10 through to plus size coats including size 20 coats, size 22 coats and size 24 coats. But as your winter coat is one of the biggest purchases of the year, and as you’re probably going to be wearing it most days from October to April, how do you make sure you buy the right one for you?

1) What do you need your coat for?
Do you need a statement coat for a night at the opera, or a practical winter coat for your daily commute? We love snow white or cream coats, but they are not so practical for your daily bus or tube journey, though they will look fabulous for special occasions. Equally, if you want a winter coat perfect for walking the dog, a floor length coat is almost guaranteed to drag in the mud while a knee length or three quarter coat will be far more practical.

2) Classic coat or colourful coat?
Black coats, navy coats and camel coats are classics and are going to look great year in, year out. They will probably match most things in your wardrobe, which is always worth considering. But if the weather is cold and dreary, a splash of colour can work wonders and lift your spirits. Try a jewel colour coat such as red, green, blue or yellow and we guarantee you’ll be smiling when you leave the house, whatever the weather!
3) 100% pure wool coat or a blend?
Nothing keeps you warm like a wool coat, but if you choose a long coat they can be quite heavy. If you prefer the style but want something lighter, try a winter coat in a wool blend with cashmere or a man-made fibre. You’ll get all the style without the weight, which can’t be bad.

4) What style of coat will suit me?
Larger ladies suit cleaner, straight cuts that are single breasted and tailored to flatter. Avoid fussy detailing such as ruffles and pleats that can add bulk. Double breasted coats and padded coats also tend to be unflattering on larger frames, so are best avoided.

Slim ladies can get away with most styles of winter coat including double breasted coats or padded coats. Try a range of styles to find what you’re happiest with.

Avoid belts unless you’re slim or petite. Wider belts are more flattering on larger waists, whereas thin belts will accentuate.

5) How do I get my coat to fit perfectly?
Try your winter coat on over a suit jacket or jumper if that’s how you’re going to wear your coat during the cooler weather. It should button up comfortably at the front without gaping, and look just as good unbuttoned. Also, make sure you can raise your arms comfortably in the coat without it nipping at the shoulders or upper arms – you’re going to be wearing this every day and it needs to work with you.
