– The Windsmoor Guide to Dressing For Your Shape
Dresses have really come into their own as a wardrobe essential in the past few years – almost replacing separates in fact. Who can blame us for their rise in popularity? A dress is so easy to wear, and you don’t really have to think about them – there is none of the “which top do I wear with this skirt?” or “what colour jacket will go with these trousers”. It’s just one-stop dressing – pick out a dress, put it on and away you go!
Ok, ok maybe we’re over-exaggerating the easiness aspect a little bit! I mean, not every dress is going to suit everybody. When choosing a dress, it’s important to bear in mind your body shape and not just follow the trends slavishly. Keep in mind that each basic dress shape has a basic body shape that it suits too – i.e. an empire line dress is good for petite ladies, a drop waist dress works well on the slender lady, a tailored hourglass shift dress works well on the curvier lady.
Dress Length
Another important thing to remember is the length – a dress on or just above the knee works well on everyone – anything shorter looks a little extreme and can date quickly. If there is a dress you love which is shorter than you usually wear, try popping it on over leggings or thick opaque tights. Maxi dresses have also been hugely popular for the past two years and its easy to see why – they are glamourous, easy to wear and look great on most shapes. The material a dress is made of is also pertinent too – the heavy weight of a wool dress does restrict its use whereas a lighter weight jersey dress or cotton dress can be layered up for year round wear. Lighter weight dresses including silk dresses also tend to be easier to dress up or down.

If you are planning on buying a glamorous dress for a big occasion such as a wedding or an important night out, think about how many times you will be able to wear it afterwards. A strikingly glamorous fashion dress which really makes a statement may be fantastic on the day, but you may only be able to wear it once as people will remember it. Either choose a style that can be dressed down afterwards with a cardigan, shrug or with different accessories, or choose a more classic style. A classic style like our old favourite the little black dress may be more easily dressed up or down, and so have an extended life beyond your big night out. However, we are not fashion killjoys!! If you see a stunning dress that you just have to have then go for it!!! We’re all for a bit of glitz and glamour once in a while!
